“What if I had invested $10,000 in ___?” is one of the most common investing curiosity searches. A time-machine chart answers it for a specific ETF (or a few) over a specific window — with clear assumptions.

Assumptions used here

  • Lump sum of $10,000 on the start date (no monthly contributions in this version).
  • Buy-and-hold; no market timing.
  • Optional DRIP for total return.
  • Stock splits applied; results are historical, not forecasts.

How to pick dates

“Earliest” uses as much overlapping history as the selected funds allow. Custom starts matter: beginning in March 2009 versus October 2007 tells different emotional stories. Try both before you trust a single screenshot.

Enter a ticker below — SPY, QQQ, VTI, SCHD, or any supported fund — and set the date you wish you had invested.

Try it yourself
